Biography

Raghul Senthilnathan is a healthcare innovation professional and entrepreneur based in London. He is the Founder and CEO of Cogniverse, where he develops virtual reality–based surgical and perioperative training solutions for healthcare education and workforce development. He also serves as an Innovation & Transformation Advisor at Medilink Midlands, supporting health technology companies in clinical innovation and NHS adoption pathways. Raghul holds an MSc in Biotech and Pharmaceutical Management with Distinction from University College London and has received recognition for his contributions to digital health, immersive medical education, and healthcare innovation.

Abstract Title

Bridging Anatomical Understanding and Immersive Surgical Simulation: The Emerging Role of VR in Medical Education The landscape of anatomical and surgical education is undergoing significant transformation as healthcare systems face increasing procedural complexity, reduced cadaver accessibility, time constrained clinical exposure, and growing demands for workforce readiness within technologically advanced surgical environments. Traditional educational approaches, while foundational, can present limitations in translating static anatomical knowledge into the dynamic spatial and procedural understanding required in modern minimally invasive and perioperative practice. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR) are emerging as powerful complementary tools capable of enhancing contextual learning, anatomical visualisation, procedural cognition, and experiential engagement within medical education. By enabling learners to interact with three-dimensional anatomical structures and simulated clinical environments in a repeatable and risk-free setting, VR has the potential to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and procedural application. This presentation explores the evolving role of immersive simulation in supporting anatomy and surgical education, drawing upon interdisciplinary experiences from the development of clinically informed VR based perioperative and procedural training environments. The session will examine how immersive technologies may contribute to improved spatial orientation, workflow familiarisation, learner engagement, and accessibility of surgical education, particularly within minimally invasive and theatre-based learning contexts. In addition, the presentation will discuss the importance of clinician collaboration, anatomical fidelity, and responsible implementation in the development of next generation educational platforms. Emerging opportunities including anatomy-linked simulation, immersive procedural rehearsal, and scalable digital learning ecosystems will also be explored as part of the broader future of surgical and anatomical education.As medical training continues to evolve alongside advances in healthcare technology, immersive VR-based learning environments may play an increasingly important role in augmenting traditional educational pathways, supporting a more accessible, contextual, and experiential model of anatomy and surgical training.
