Enhancing Cyber Resilience in Aviation
Nombulelo Lekota, Ph.D., is a founding member of TekJins, a technology company that specializes in delivering optimal technology solutions, training, and consulting services. In her capacity as Chief Operations Officer, she possesses 26 years of experience in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. Dr. Lekota holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science, with her research focusing on aviation cybersecurity. As a Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg, she is aligned with the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering (ACSSE). Furthermore, Dr. Lekota has served as a CyberBRICS Research Fellow at CTS FGV DIREITO RIO in Brazil, where her research centered on evaluating South Africa's readiness to achieve sovereignty in Artificial Intelligence (AI). She is the co-author of four scholarly papers that explore critical issues, including aviation cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, AI sovereignty, and adversarial attacks on AI models. Reference: This paper examines the critical challenges of interoperability, cybersecurity, and vulnerabilities within the aviation sector, using Africa as a case study. These issues are vital for maintaining both national and global safety and security within the industry. While the integration of diverse systems and technologies in aviation operations can enhance efficiency, it simultaneously introduces significant risks. Interoperability challenges frequently arise when different systems fail to communicate effectively, potentially resulting in operational disruptions across the aviation networks. Additionally, the increasing reliance on digital technologies renders critical aviation infrastructures vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, putting data integrity and operational safety at risk. To mitigate these vulnerabilities and strengthen the resilience of Africa's aviation sector, a multi-faceted approach is essential. This includes conducting comprehensive operational risk assessments, investing in technical skills and awareness programs, promoting information sharing and collaboration among stakeholders, establishing standardised regulatory policies across the region, and allocating resources to research and development initiatives focused on automation and AI-driven security measures. By implementing these proposed strategies, this paper aims to establish a robust framework that enhances the aviation industry's resilience in Africa against the evolving challenges posed by technological advancements.
