Dr Grace Otobo is a dedicated Chemistry lecturer of a Federal University in Nigeria with PhD in physical chemistry, MSc Environmental Chemistry and BSc Chemistry. A researcher with research interest in food science,Soil science and pharmaceutical Science. Abstract Title

The Chemisty of Organic Fertilizer (Water Hyacinth, Cattle Dung) and Inorganic Fertilizer (NPK) and possible Healt Risk on living Organisms The study investigated the Chemistry of organic fertilizer made from water hyacinth and Cow dung compared with inorganic fertilizer (NPK fertilizer) in terms of mineral content and total organic carbon. The fertilizer generated from water hyacinth fertilizer was compared with organic fertilizer made from cow dung, as well as NPK fertilizer. Analysis of the three fertilizers revealed that the water hyacinth organic fertilizer had higher levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium (36.133 mg/l, 32.133 mg/l, 27.827 mg/l, and 14.427 mg/l) respectively when compared with the cow dung organic fertilizer (14.098 mg/l, 13.063 mg/l, 12.488 mg/l, and 7.217 mg/l) nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium respectively. In contrast, the total organic carbon content of Cow dung fertilizer (47.323%) is higher than that of water hyacinth liquid fertilizer (29.999%), and sludge fertilizer (21.388%) and NPK fertilizer (0.772%).This is attributed to the palm fronts added to water hyacinth and cow dung fertilizer in the course of production. The results showed that NPK fertilizer has higher levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (41.892 mg/l, 59.130 mg/l, and 41.778 mg/l) respectively, than other fertilizers. However, because of the inorganic nature of NPK fertilizer, excessive addition of this synthetic fertilize imposes some negative effects such as nitrate contamination in water and food causing metheoglobinemia (blue Baby) in infants, respiratory issues (bronchitis or asthma),cancer risk on human and algal blooms, harming aquatic life and drinking water. On the other hand, organic fertilizer such as water hyacinth and cattle dung do not when well manage because of its biodegradable nature. Therefore using water hyacinth as an organic fertilizer would be super beneficial than NPK fertilizer due to its long-term effects and cow dung fertilizers due to its higher nutrient content.
