The impact of austerity and austerity on human dignity Abstract: Austerity policies around the world have had a negative impact on people's mental and physical health, especially among marginalized groups. The global financial crisis that erupted after 2008 has shown how fiscal consolidation has exacerbated health inequalities at the international level. In addition, it shows that austerity policies tend to exacerbate general mental health inequalities, especially in regions where public services are already in poor condition. Empirical research confirms the following: Local government services, such as health care, cultural, environmental, and planning support, have been significantly associated with a decline in mental health, especially in disadvantaged areas. More broadly, systematic reviews show that income-related stress caused by austerity, housing instability, and food insecurity seriously undermine the mental health of people at different income levels, with those who are already disadvantaged disproportionately affected. Taken together, these data confirm that austerity not only reduces budgets, but also increases stress among vulnerable groups, especially ethnic minorities.
