Abstract Title

Prof. Dr. Dr. (H.C.) Benedicta Neysa Nathania Vieira de Mello, FRS, FRGS, is an interdisciplinary scholar, policy expert, and global sustainability leader whose work spans public health, climate governance, economics, and human rights. Her academic journey reflects a strong commitment to integrating science, policy, and ethics in addressing complex global challenges. She has held postdoctoral and research appointments at internationally recognized institutions across Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom, contributing to multidisciplinary research in biochemistry, epidemiology, sustainable finance, and climate policy. Her doctoral work and subsequent research explore the intersections of renewable energy transitions, sustainable development, and global economic resilience. Prof. Vieira de Mello is actively engaged with multiple United Nations bodies, including UNESCO, UNFCCC, ITU, and OCHA, where she contributes to sustainability policy, digital transformation, climate adaptation, and global governance initiatives. She has represented youth and academic voices in high-level international forums, including climate negotiations and multilateral summits. Her scholarship bridges oxidative stress research, public health systems, environmental justice, and climate-responsive governance frameworks. She is particularly interested in integrating human rights principles into climate and health policymaking to advance equitable and evidence-based solutions. Reference: Urban Heat, Informal Mobility, and the Silent Amplification of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases: An Epidemiological Systems Perspective The accelerating convergence of climate change, rapid urbanization, and informal mobility patterns is reshaping the epidemiology of infectious diseases in ways that remain underexplored within conventional public health frameworks. This abstract presents a niche epidemiological perspective that conceptualizes urban heat exposure as a catalytic determinant in the transmission dynamics of vector-borne infectious diseases, particularly within densely populated, low-resource urban environments characterized by informal transport systems and fragmented health surveillance. Rising ambient temperatures and urban heat island effects alter vector ecology by shortening pathogen incubation periods, extending vector breeding seasons, and expanding geographic suitability for disease transmission. While these mechanisms are well-documented in isolation, their interaction with human behavioral adaptations—especially informal mobility such as motorcycle taxis, street vending, and peri-urban commuting—has received limited empirical attention. This gap is critical, as informal mobility networks often operate outside regulatory oversight, creating epidemiological “blind spots” where exposure, infection, and onward transmission occur with minimal detection. Using an integrated public health and epidemiological lens, this abstract argues that heat-driven behavioral shifts—such as altered work hours, increased nighttime activity, and congregation around limited cooling resources—create micro-environments of intensified human–vector contact. These conditions disproportionately affect socioeconomically marginalized populations, reinforcing health inequities while simultaneously undermining disease control efforts. Traditional surveillance systems, which rely heavily on fixed healthcare facilities and formal reporting structures, frequently fail to capture cases arising from these contexts, leading to systematic underestimation of disease burden. From an infectious disease modeling perspective, the coupling of thermal stress, mobility heterogeneity, and vector adaptability introduces nonlinearities that challenge classical compartmental models. Static assumptions regarding contact rates, spatial movement, and seasonality no longer hold in urban settings experiencing chronic heat exposure. Instead, a systems-based epidemiological approach is required—one that integrates climate metrics, mobility data, and socio-spatial vulnerability indicators into adaptive surveillance and early warning systems. The abstract further highlights the implications for public health policy and intervention design. Vector control strategies that focus solely on environmental management or household-level interventions risk limited effectiveness when informal mobility continuously reintroduces exposure across neighborhoods. Similarly, risk communication campaigns that do not account for heat-induced behavioral adaptations may fail to reach populations at peak risk. Embedding climate-sensitive epidemiology into urban health governance is therefore essential, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where urban growth outpaces infrastructure development. In conclusion, this abstract positions urban heat as an active epidemiological force rather than a background environmental variable. By framing infectious disease transmission as an emergent property of climate stress, informal mobility, and structural inequality, it advances a niche yet increasingly relevant agenda for public health research. Future studies should prioritize transdisciplinary methodologies, combining epidemiology, climate science, and urban studies, to design surveillance systems and interventions that are resilient to both infectious disease threats and a warming urban world. Addressing this nexus is not only a scientific imperative but also a matter of health equity and global infectious disease preparedness.
