Equity, Experience, and Engagement in Virtual Remote Monitoring

Abstract

As health systems increasingly embrace remote virtual monitoring, especially in response to pandemics, the promise of convenience, safety, and scalability is clear. Yet behind this digital shift lies a more complex human experience that one shaped by access, understanding, and cost. Patients receiving remote monitoring at home often express appreciation for reduced exposure risks and timely responses. However, many also encounter unexpected barriers: difficulty navigating digital platforms, lack of real-time communication, and emotional distance from care providers. For some, these challenges are compounded by hidden personal expenses, ranging from data costs and medical supplies to caregiving and transport logistics especially in households with limited resources. These realities raise critical questions for the future of digital health. How do we ensure that virtual care remains person-centred, equitable, and financially accessible? How can remote monitoring platforms better account for the diverse capacities and constraints of users? The path forward requires reimagining remote care not just as a technological solution, but as a social contract grounded in empathy, inclusion, and financial protection. Only then can digital innovation truly fulfil its potential to transform healthcare delivery without deepening disparities.
