Abstract

Psychiatric Morbidity Among Caregivers of Patients Suffering from Dementia
There are an estimated 30 million people with dementia worldwide currently, and this figure is likely to double every 20 years. People with dementia generally require high levels of care, most of which is provided by informal or family caregivers. Without caregivers, people with dementia would have a poorer quality of life and would need institutional care more quickly, and national economies would be swept away by the advancing demographic tidal wave. This cross sectional observational study was conducted in the in-patient and out-patient department of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health. National Institute of Mental Health is one of the tertiary level specialized government hospitals for psychiatric patients. Convenient sampling technique was used. More than half of the respondents came from 28-37 years age group. Female was quite double than male. Most of the caregivers were housewife and married. Most of the caregivers had no previous experience of caring this type of patients. This study has shown that psychiatric morbidity among caregivers of dementia patients was very high, with burden of care being the most important factor responsible for this. More than half of the caregivers suffered from major depressive disorder followed by obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, panic disorder without agoraphobia, social phobia, somatoform disorders and eating disorders. No significant association was found between socio-economic characteristics and psychiatric morbidity. Age of the caregiver had strong influence on developing psychiatric morbidity.
