Biography

With over 32 years of experience in pharmaceutical packaging design and development, I have successfully led innovative and sustainable packaging initiatives for global markets including USA, Europe, Japan, Russia, Africa, Canada, and Australia. My expertise covers end-to-end packaging development, material selection, equipment handling, regulatory documentation, stability studies, artwork review, and vendor audits. I have effectively collaborated with cross-functional teams to deliver cost-effective and customized packaging solutions for diverse pharmaceutical products. I possess strong exposure to SOP, BPR, STP review, regulatory submissions, and packaging characterization activities. I have also recruited, trained, and guided technical teams while maintaining excellent communication with international clients. As a speaker invited by universities and through international vendor audits in USA and Europe, I have represented organizations at global platforms. Additionally, I have authored three technical books and published over 30 articles in international journals. Backed by a PG Diploma in Packaging Technology from the Indian Institute of Packaging, I now seek a senior management opportunity in packaging design & development with a progressive pharmaceutical organization.

Abstract Title

Applications of AI/ML in Packaging Development for Biosimilar ProductsArtificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are transforming pharmaceutical packaging development and inspection systems for biosimilar and other sterile dosage forms. Advanced technologies using Python-based platforms, Keras, OpenCV, and TensorFlow are playing a major role in packaging R&D and commercial manufacturing by enabling intelligent image processing, object detection, barcode verification, label inspection, and automated quality control. AI-powered machine vision systems are highly effective in detecting defects in vials, prefilled syringes (PFS), plastic bottles, flexible pouches, tablets, capsules, gels, and semi-solid dosage forms where manual inspection is inadequate. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, maintaining strict quality standards is critical, especially for injectable products where contamination, fill variation, particulate matter, or labeling errors can directly impact patient safety. AI-enabled inspection systems improve precision, minimize human error, enhance production efficiency, and ensure compliance with global regulatory expectations. Technologies such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) facilitate accurate image classification and defect recognition for high-speed production environments. The study also highlights critical packaging challenges such as glass delamination in pharmaceutical vials. Factors including high pH formulations, phosphate and citrate buffers, terminal sterilization, elevated storage temperatures, and high alkali content in glass significantly contribute to delamination risks. Preventive strategies such as siliconization, ammonium sulfate treatment, appropriate glass selection, and the use of COC/COP vials are discussed. Additionally, the importance of extractable and leachable studies for pharmaceutical packaging components, inhalers, catheters, and biologic drug delivery systems is emphasized. Current market trends toward advanced coatings, fluoropolymer lubricants, and silicone-free syringe systems for self-injectors and wearable infusion devices are also reviewed. The article further addresses the growing role of innovative packaging solutions in NDDS and NCE products, highlighting the future integration of AI, smart packaging, and sustainable pharmaceutical packaging technologies.
