Professor Ogbonna Collins Nwabuko is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a board-eligible academic hematopathologist and clinician educator with over 16 years of continuous clinical, research, and educational leadership at the federal tertiary level. He currently serves simultaneously as Dean of Studies, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, and Professor of Hematology and Chief Consultant Hematopathologist at David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences and Teaching Hospital, Uburu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. His clinical expertise covers the complete diagnostic scope of the hematopathology service: bone marrow pathology, lymph node pathology, flow cytometry, clinical hematology, hemoglobinopathy evaluation, blood and body fluid morphology, and full evaluation of hematopoietic neoplasms, including weekend call responsibility. His research profile is among the most prolific in hematology in West Africa, with 151 peer-reviewed outputs indexed across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and The Lancet Haematology. As sole Principal Investigator of the BM2NGA and BSCDNGA national translational research programs, he has demonstrated the capacity for independent and highly collaborative research leadership. He has presented at ASH, APHA, and the European School of Hematology, building the national and international reputation Penn explicitly invites. He holds academic appointments at six universities across 14 years, most recently as Professor, King David Federal University of Health Sciences; Associate Professor, Gregory University; Senior Lecturer at the University of Calabar; Lecturer-1, Abia State University, and currently tutors Diploma/MSc Hematology students for the University of Buckingham, UK. He holds the FMCPath in Hematology, the internationally recognised equivalent of American Board of Pathology certification.
The Potential of Innovative Technology (Telemedicine and Digital Health Platforms) in Precision Hematology: Challenges of Implementation in Sub-Saharan Africa—A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Precision hematology increasingly relies on timely diagnosis, specialist consultation, genomic testing, longitudinal monitoring, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Telemedicine and digital health platforms have emerged as promising tools for improving access to hematology services, particularly in resource-constrained settings. However, implementation across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains uneven due to infrastructural, economic, and regulatory barriers. To systematically review and synthesize evidence on the effectiveness, opportunities, and implementation challenges of telemedicine and digital health platforms in precision hematology across sub-Saharan Africa. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, African Journals Online (AJOL), and Cochrane Library were searched for studies published between January 2010 and December 2025. Studies evaluating telemedicine, mobile health (mHealth), electronic health records, remote monitoring systems, digital referral platforms, and artificial intelligence-supported hematology services were included. Risk of bias was assessed using validated quality assessment tools. Evidence suggests that telemedicine and digital health interventions improve specialist access, care coordination, treatment adherence, patient satisfaction, and continuity of care for patients with hematologic disorders. Digital platforms facilitated multidisciplinary team decision-making, remote monitoring, and reduced travel-related burdens. However, significant implementation barriers included inadequate internet connectivity, limited digital infrastructure, workforce shortages, high costs, regulatory concerns, and data security challenges. Telemedicine and digital health technologies have substantial potential to strengthen precision hematology services in SSA. Sustainable implementation requires investments in digital infrastructure, workforce capacity building, supportive policies, and equitable access strategies.
