Biography

Mashebane Thosago is a South African professional, trainer, farmer, and consultant with a background in Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Aquaculture. She holds a B.Sc. in Microbiology and Biochemistry and a B.Sc. Honours degree in Aquaculture. She is currently the Founder and Director of an NPO, with extensive experience in climate-smart aquaculture, sustainable food systems, and community development. Her key areas of expertise include Climate Smart Aquaculture Technologies in urban areas, mitigation of post-harvest losses associated with climate change, and community perspectives on Just Transition in offshore wind development. She has strong experience in scientific and research report writing, data management, knowledge management, training and mentorship, community engagement, industry liaison, leadership, financial planning, and project coordination. With experience across Southern Africa since 2021 and international and continental engagements since 2023, Mashebane is committed to promoting sustainable aquaculture, climate resilience, community empowerment, and inclusive approaches to emerging environmental and energy challenges.

Abstract Title

Advancing Environmental Sustainability in Urban Development                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Abstract: Rapid urbanisation, population growth, and increasing pressure on natural resources have intensified environmental challenges in cities worldwide. These challenges include climate change, air and water pollution, inadequate waste management, loss of biodiversity, and increasing energy and water demands. In response, advancing environmental sustainability in urban development has become essential for creating cities that are resilient, inclusive, and capable of supporting present and future generations. The talk examines strategies for integrating environmental sustainability into urban development, with particular attention to the role of smart city approaches, green infrastructure, renewable energy, sustainable mobility, circular economy principles, efficient resource management, and nature-based solutions. It explores how digital technologies, data-driven planning, and innovation can support more efficient use of resources while reducing environmental impacts. The presentation also considers the importance of participatory governance and collaboration among governments, communities, academia, civil society, and the private sector in achieving sustainable urban outcomes. The discussion highlights that smart urban development should extend beyond technological innovation to incorporate environmental protection, social equity, and long-term resilience. Sustainable cities require integrated planning approaches that recognise the interdependence between urban systems, ecosystems, and human well-being. Ultimately, advancing environmental sustainability in urban development requires a shift from short-term, resource-intensive growth toward regenerative, low-carbon, and climate-resilient urban models.
