Women's Empowerment cum Gender Equity: Catalysts for Sustainable Social and Economic Development in Nigeria Abstract The present research is on women's empowerment cum gender equity as predictors of sustainable social as well as economic development in Nigeria. In specific terms, this study determined the level at which women's empowerment relates to sustainable social development in addition to the extent that gender equity promotes sustainable economic development within the research area. Two research questions were raised and two hypotheses formulated to give direction to the study. The correlational research design was employed in the study. The research population here involved 1,245 women entrepreneurs, female professionals, public sector employees, officials of women-focused non-governmental organizations as well as gender desk officers selected from the sampled States in Nigeria based on her six geopolitical zones. The study made use of 420 respondents as sample selected using a multistage sampling approach involving stratified as well as simple random sampling methods. A structured instrument termed "Women's Empowerment, Gender Equity and Sustainable Development Questionnaire (WEGESDQ)" was the instrument used for data collection in the study, which was validated by experts in Gender Studies, Sociology, and Measurement and Evaluation Department, both from University of Calabar. The instrument reliability was established with Cronbach's alpha techniques, yielding average coefficients of .87. In data analyses, descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, was adopted in answering the research questions, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was employed to testing the hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The result at the end of data analyses indicated that women's empowerment as well as gender equity both individually have a significant positive relationship with sustainable social and economic development in Nigeria. Sequel to the results, the researcher therefore concluded that strengthening policies as well as programmes enhances women's empowerment and gender equity is essential for achieving inclusive and sustainable national development. The researcher therefore recommended among other that Government at all levels make effort to strengthen policies and programmes which promote women's empowerment via improved access to quality education, vocational skills, finance as well as leadership opportunities to promote sustainable social development in Nigeria.
