Biography

Dr. Bong-Joong Kim is a Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), South Korea, where he also served as Dean from 2023 to 2025. His research focuses on the synthesis and in situ characterization of organic and inorganic nanostructures for applications in catalysis, electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and energy technologies. Dr. Kim has authored numerous high-impact publications in leading scientific journals and has received several prestigious honors, including the Presidential Commendation for the Promotion of Science and Technology (2025). He serves on the editorial boards of multiple international journals and actively contributes to the organization of major international conferences in materials science and nanotechnology.

Abstract Title

My research focuses on the controllable synthesis of organic and inorganic nanostructures and the investigation of their properties at the individual device level, with applications spanning catalysis, electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and sensing. I employ advanced in situ multimodal platforms—including TEM, SEM, and optical systems—to directly observe nanoscale growth mechanisms, phase transitions, and property evolution under realistic environmental conditions. Building on this approach, my work advances exsolved nanocatalysts, ultralow-k nanolattice capacitors, VO2-based phase-transition devices, and dynamic nanostructure formation processes for next-generation energy and electronic technologies.
